The story so far

In the beginning…

Badger has been working for the last 25 years as a travelling stone mason amongst many other things. He decided to move to Cornwall because he wanted to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the towns and cities. So he drove up the east coast of England over Scotland where there he found his passion in stone work and was taken on by a local sixth generation Waller.
‘I don’t want your money he said, I’ll work free for your knowledge!’ And that’s how he got into stone work. After driving down the country he found himself in Plymouth, the gateway to Cornwall. After there he lived in Notter Bridge where he met old Cyril a true countryman from Pilaton. who took him under his wing and taut him what he new, and what Old Cyril didn’t know you could write on the back of a stamp. Cornwall seemed like just the right place for his Celtic soul.. in the early nineties, he settled in Polzeath in North Cornwall where he became a bit of a character amidst the local community, but settling wasn’t to easy for him and he ended up making some very bad choices that would effect his future Liberty. In 2020, he came to Noon Cregg and fell in love with the place; the old stone cottage, which he spent the year restoring, the short walk down to the cove where he could swim every day, and the magical Merry Maidens stone circle right next to the cottage.

Noon Cregg’s first year…

At the start of 2020 Badger set out restoring the old stone cottage for John at Noon Cregg. John had helped a friend of his and Badger wanted to repay the kind deed, Badger made many a lifelong friend by offering to teach people the arts of stone masonry, provide them with shelter and delicious locally sourced food cooked on an open fire, and in return their guests would help out on the cottage, and clearing the land

Long days restoring the cottage were rewarded with swimming and surfing down at the cove, food and music around the campfire after dark and long hikes along the coast.

John’s Father was a Major in Bomber Command in WW2. This had a very sad affect on him when he came back, as it did for all who served and saw action.

“The Sins Of the fathers shall be laid upon their children!”

I saw John’s pain deep down in his soul and took him under my wing. Things went well for a while but the drink got the better of him as it did his father. John is sadly no longer with us. But our dream still goes on here at Noon Cregg Veterans Retreat. Where all are welcomed

Looking forward…

After the successful completion of the stone cottage, we now want to focus on building the rest of this low-impact, fully self sufficient retreat. Our plan for the next few years is to build traditional free standing log cabins, a natural pool, and half an acre of top quality organic ground to grow vegetables all year round. The 180 apple trees will need nurturing and there’ll be pigs, goats and chickens to look after, not to mention a blossoming 600 mt vineyard to bring back to life.

What we’ve got here to do is:

Art, wood craft, leather craft,, rope work, walking. I’ll train you up in the lost art of Stone walling, traditional log cabin building. ‘If we get planning!” Metal detecting. Fishing, bird watching, astronomy, foraging’ Bush Craft. Getting back to nature’s natural medicines we take for granted. We’ll be making our own apple juices and grape juices. Preserves. Tending the organic vegetables as we as getting out into the community helping the elderly population in the area. and so much more. If none of the above takes your fancy, you can just chill out and take in the peace and quiet.

Now we have moved on from Lamorna, and the Merry Maidens. We have a new venture to get our hearts into. Nine acres of land kindly given by a local lady. Carol. Who has a huge heart for helping those less fortunate. Carol has allowed Noon Cregg to stay on the land and set up a safe place for veterans, as was hers and our original plan. After seeing our situation on the news. Carol kindly stepped in and offered up her land to carry on our vital work with veterans..

The nine and a half acres has two ponds, an orchard, and plenty of room for growing our own vegetables, and the plan to raise our own livestock. This will make us totally self sufficient, and will carry on the original plan of Noon Cregg. Being totally off grid. A haven for those lost, broken and those just looking for a place to rest, and reflect.
